Seminar Narrative
The purpose of the trip consists of presenting a seminar on the importance of personal character in business. The students from the Institute who participate in the seminar are presented, for the first time, with principles—drawn from Scriptures—that can be applied to their work world. They undertake a series of exercises that help them understand basic Christian principles and to understand the application of these principles to their everyday world. They see a side of business that, for the most part, is alien to most of them. And they see the value of applying these concepts to their workplaces. These are young people that know Communism has failed them. But, they have not seen a set of teachings that could replace this doctrine. Until now! The intent of these seminars is to help the students see how principles of the Bible can assist them in their workplaces. The seminars begin with some very basic ideas that help the students understand themselves more clearly. These are good students who are searching for fulfillment in their own lives. They know they must work in order to survive. But, they also know that merely working does not totally fulfill their needs for life. They are searching. They are open and receptive. The students participating in the seminar are broken into groups of five to seven. A Harding student is assigned to each of the groups to act as a facilitator in carrying out the group activities required over the week. The personal relationships that are developed are used as a means for initiating personal Bible studies during the week in the evenings. The Harding students have the opportunity to share their personal experiences about their own Christian lives with the Ukrainian students. This is done in the classroom and one on one or in small groups in the evenings.
In addition to the seminar work, the students periodically have the opportunity to visit selected orphanages in the Donetsk area. Following is an excerpt from one of the Harding students about a visit. “The team also has the chance to go and visit an orphanage, which is located in the outer parts of Donetsk. What happens during this activity cannot be explained with simple words, it is so touching and unique that the best word to describe it would be a blessing. As soon as you see the kids and the kids see you, you get enchanted by them. One of the most remarkable things about them is that even though they are just little kids, they prove that even a little kid can teach anybody a lesson of love and kindness with just a smile. Because of time issues the team can only stay with the kids for a couple of hours, however, in the end, when you are passing through the orphanage doors, you can’t help to smile and thank God for blessing you so much, but also for having the opportunity of making those little kids day, by making |
